The Fear Factor: Why People Hesitate to Make Adjustments for Personal and Professional Growth

See this content in the original post

Why don’t people make adjustments?

If you know what to do and how to do it, what prevents you from taking action, or achieving the results you want?

Get Comfy

Are you tired of those flashy self-help gurus telling you to step out of your comfort zone and make adjustments for personal and professional growth? Yeah, me too. I mean, who needs growth when you can stay comfortably nestled in your familiar routine, right?

But let's face it, deep down, we all know that change is inevitable. It's like that stubborn piece of spinach stuck between your teeth that you can't ignore no matter how hard you try. So, why is it that despite our better judgment, we often find ourselves hesitating to make those necessary adjustments?

In this article, we're going to dive headfirst into the terrifying world of "The Fear Factor." We'll dissect the reasons why we tend to resist change like it's the plague.

Grab a cup of coffee or wine, put on your stretchy pants, and find a big, comfy chair (because I want you comfy while we get uncomfortable). And let's navigate the treacherous waters of personal and professional growth together.

Make These 5 Adjustments

In a recent article, I shared the five adjustments you can make to get ahead of 95% of your competition.

These adjustments include cultivating the right mindset, setting effective goals, managing time efficiently, developing and enhancing your relationships, and having the right perspective. By implementing these adjustments, you can position yourself ahead of the pack and increase your chances of success.

But even with this info, many won't.

Why?

Why People Hesitate to Make Adjustments

Change can be intimidating, like that looming shadow in a dimly lit room. But is that really enough to hold us back?

Susan Scott writes in her book Fierce Conversations, "The problem named is the problem solved."

Perhaps we can identify the problem holding you back and that could be the thing that springboards you into action.

1. Fear of the unknown: Making adjustments means stepping out of one's comfort zone and into new, uncharted territory. This can be scary and daunting for many people.

2. Fear of failure: It's natural to be afraid of failing. We worry that making adjustments, taking risks and opening up ourselves to criticism could lead us down the wrong path or away from our goals.

3. Fear of success: Believe it or not, some people are scared of succeeding. Success can bring about a lot of changes.

4. Lack of motivation: People may not see the need for making adjustments if they are content with their current situation. Without a strong desire for change, they may not feel motivated to take action.

5. Lack of awareness: People may not realize that they need to make adjustments in their lives. Without self-awareness or feedback from others, they may not recognize the need for change.

6. Lack of support: Making adjustments can be challenging, and having a support system can be helpful. Without the right support, people may struggle to stay motivated and maintain their progress.

Take the Leap of Faith

At the end of the day, making adjustments can be scary and overwhelming. But it's important to remember your starting line is not going to change much by waiting. But you change where you are by starting where you are.

You can continue to try to reason your way into action.

Or you can just take it.
