You Can Do So Much In 10 Minutes - Productivity Nugget #113

You can waste 10 minutes or you can make 10 minutes productive. Time management is a myth and yet you try. And chances are you're failing. If you hear yourself saying things like this, "I don't have time for....

"I HAVE to.....

"I NEED to...

“You can do so much in 10 minutes time. Ten minutes, once gone, are gone for good. Divide your life into 10-minute units and sacrifice as few of them as possible in meaningless activity.” – Ingvar Kamprad, Founder of the furniture brand IKEA

The best way to become more productive and get the most out of time management is to focus on the essential and eliminate distractions. I know that is more difficult then ever. To eliminate distractions. There is so much coming at you, Chris Brogan calls it BLUR. And he is not referring to the band BLUR and Song 2, which as a side note is a great song to get you fired up.

Eliminate blur. Stop multitasking. Stop allowing everything in, if that’s not helping. - Chris Brogan

Eliminate Distractions

I ask people on twitter often how many browser windows do you have open and applications right now? Look at your own monitor. How many things do you have open at once right now?

How can you possible focus on the essential when you have all those distractions sitting right in front of you?

  • Eliminate distractions by closing down tweetdeck or hootsuite.
  • Eliminate distractions by closing facebook.
  • Eliminate distractions by closing your email.

How To Keep Focus For Longer Periods Of Time

Stop trying. Stop trying to keep focus for longer periods of time. You can't focus for an hour. I'm giving you permission to stop beating yourself up over it. The same trainers and speakers that are telling the importance of time blocking are the same ones that do Train the Trainer courses telling us Trainers, "Change the style and methodology of your training every 9 minutes because your class will lose focus."

No duh! So why are we telling people to time block for huge chunks of time and making them feel bad when they fail at doing that. If you are interested in learning how to become more productive and keep your focus check out my 7 Steps to Keeping Your Focus.

You really can do so much in 10 minutes. What will you do with your next 10 minutes?
